Highveld Owner of the Week: Joe Soma
The ROA were thrilled to announce Joe Soma as the ROA Owner of the Week for his perfect victory with Red Saxon on Saturday 5 March 2022 at Turrfontein Racecourse. Red Saxon, at a starting price of 25/1, is co-owned with Ms S Bhana. The Soma team were spot on in their preparation for the World Sports Betting sponsored Grade 1 SA Classic (R1,5 million) over 1800 metres. Jockey Julius Mariba earned his first Group 1 win and groom Elias Mabunda also earned a special mention as well as the Golden Groom prize for the time and effort he has played in getting Red Saxon to peak condition. The race was packed with top class competition and Red Saxon and Safe Passage produced a thrilling finish, head up, head down, with Safe Passage losing by a short head. The winner was bred at Narrow Creek Stud – Red Ray – Rodeo Sioux by Casey Tibbs (IRE). Soma has the knack of bringing a tear to the eye of those who love the sport of racing and did not disappoint when dedicating this win to his recently sold Gotthegreenlight.
