Trainer Gavin Smith might just be moulding the career of another Vodacom Durban-July winner at his Fairview stables in Port Elizabeth.

“He reminds me a little bit of Bold Silvano,” Smith said of Friday’s winner of the R150 000 Listed Dahlia Plate, Hooves Of Troy, that was ridden by Muzi Yeni. Bold Silvano started his career in Smith’s care and went on to win the July in 2010.

Smith does expect more great performances of the 2yo son of Vercingetorix after a fine showing on Friday. “He is a strong boy and is still maturing. Hopefully he will go from strength to strength.

“The team put in many hours of hard work with this bull of a colt. He is a lovely horse to train.”

Smith was full of praise for Yeni on “riding a perfect race coming from second last to win going away” and also congratulated the owners of Hooves of Troy, Frank Burggraaf and Hartley SA (Pty) Ltd (Nom: Peter Gibson), on the lovely win.

Foreign Source, trained by Alan Greeff, ran second and Smith also took the third place with Gold Dragon.

This was Smith’s third Dahlia Plate victory in the last three years and this race has been dominated by Greeff and Smith in recent times. Since 2011 Smith has won the Dahlia Plate four times and Greeff five times.
