This was the bonus race day that the stable of trainer Sharon Kotzen has been waiting for.

Sharon Kotzen Racing (SKR) won a Maiden Plate on Friday (12th April) on the Fairview Polytrack where a Racing Association bonus went to the winning connections.

Later at the same meeting SKR also won the second leg of the World Sports Betting East Cape Poly Challenge (Non-Black-Type) which makes the winning horse Let’s Play Ball the favourite to win the bonus of R50 000 for the owners of the best performing horse in the series.

“It was a fantastic day for SKR,” the trainer said.

“Chief Black Horse won the RA bonus race with a clever ride by Luyolo Mxothwa.

“Thanks Luyolo and thanks to (owners) Arne and tannie Marie Botha who were at the course, and Izak Berg. It was great to have a winner in the (late) Ben Botha silks.”

Let’s Play Ball won the 2nd leg of the Poly Challenge over 1400m for the owners Len Block, Tony de Charmoy and Andy Williams.

Winning jockey Ryan Munger said he was impressed with Let’s Play Ball and that it should be very interesting to see if the 3yo gelding can win the 3rd leg on 10th May over the longer 1600m.

Kotzen said Let’s Play ball will definitely contest the 3rd leg. “If he runs like today he will be in with a chance again. He runs well on the poly surface and we will try the 1600m.”

The trainer also thanked WSB for their sponsorship of the series which she said is a highlight on the East Cape’s racing calendar.

Ryno du Plessis of WSB was at the track and invited the patrons to be at Fairview for the 3rd leg, and also for the WSB East Cape Derby that will be the highlight of the meeting on the turf track the next day (11th May).
