That famous Port Elizabeth team work came to the fore once again on Friday (1 March) at Fairview. After the first race of this meeting there was a jockey protest about wet patches on the outside of the grass track. It took a bit of time to weigh up all the options and it was decided to move the false rail inwards. All the role players made the necessary adjustments and the very exciting meeting went ahead without problems. Last month the PE team work also made sure of a successful meeting in extremely hot conditions on the Polytrack. It was then decided to abandon the last race in the interest of the horses that had to cope with the heat. The feature on Friday was the R150 000 Listed Ibhayi Stakes over 1400m, won by the Cape visitor Fabian, trained by Candice Robinson. This race was the first leg of the East Cape Sophomore Challenge, with the Guineas and Derby to follow. Another East Cape Challenge, the Poly Challenge, will start on 18 March.
