Mike Bass will not renew his trainers’ licence at the end of this season and will be handing the reins of his operation over to his daughter Candice Robinson, who has so ably taken over since he nearly lost his life mid-year.

Robinson announced the decision after Paterfamilias put in a terrific trial for the J&B Met next month by winning the Premier Trophy (Grade 2) over 1800m at Kenilworth on Saturday.

Said Robinson: “At the end of the season I’m going to be taking out my trainers’ licence. We’re still going to be racing under the Bass Racing banner. My dad will certainly be there in an advisory capacity even though the plan is for him to not renew his licence. We’ve got a way to go still. It’s a great opportunity for me.”

Stable jockey Grant van Niekerk had the 14-10 favourite in midfield as Krambambuli set a slightly faster than pedestrian pace ahead of Bass-trained Helderberg Blue and French Revolution. King Of Pain raced alongside Paterfamilias, about five lengths off the tow, followed by Royal Dreamer, Gold Onyx, Master’s Eye and Punta Arenas.
