French Navy, favourite at 7-2 for the SANSUI Summer Cup (Grade 1) over 2000m at Turffontein, did not do badly when pulling No 8 draw for Joburg’s premier race on Saturday 29 November.

French Navy, one of two runners from the stable of ruling champion trainer Sean Tarry, was last season’s Equus Champion Three-Year-Old Colt/Gelding with his wins including the SA Classic and Daily News 2000. He had his first start as a four-year-old in the Peermont Emperors Palace Charity Mile and was not disgraced in finishing sixth behind Bouclette Top. He stumbled at the start and encountered traffic problems before running on strongly late, making up about 7.50 lengths in the final 400m. He will much prefer the 2000m distance of this R2-million race and is a worthy favourite. Tarry’s other runner, Halve The Deficit, drew at No 9.
