The South African team outgunned their overseas rivals to win the International Jockeys’ Challenge by 453 points to 368, but it was a plucky performance by the visitors.

Only 17 points separated the two teams after Friday’s first leg at Fairview in Port Elizabeth, with French jockey Aurelien Lemaitre taking the riding honours on that day. But the South Africans did appear to have the better rides in the Turffontein leg and once Piere Strydom won the opening race and SA captain Gavin Lerena the second, the gap between the team widened significantly.

Lerena was joined by Strydom, Anthony Delpech, Anton Marcus, Greg Cheyne, but unfortunately not S’manga Khumalo.  Khumalo was injured in the opening race when his mount, Greatfiveeight, reared while making his way from the parade ring to the track and the jockey was thrown off.
