The East Cape horse of the year Star Burst Galaxy has just been retired to stud but the Tara Laing stable already has another exciting filly in the yard.

The 4yo filly Raven Girl showed with her victory in Friday’s (21 September) R110 000 Walmer Handicap (Non-Black-Type) that she could be something special at Fairview in Port Elizabeth.

Drawn 11 from 11, the Zimbabwe Oaks winner won easily over 1800m on the polytrack with Chase Maujean in the saddle.

It was only her second start in PE after she was trained in Zimbabwe by Bridget Stidolph. Raven Girl now races in the blue and white silks of her breeders Drakenstein Stud.

“She is Gavin’s baby,” Laing said, referring to former champion jockey Gavin Venter that has been doing the work riding.

“She is a lovely filly, elegant, she’s like a ballerina but she is not an easy ride in the morning. It is all worth it though if she wins like that.”

Raven Girl has won 5 races with 2 places from her 12 starts.
