There is no doubt that the Fairview crowd love the longest race in South Africa.

Every year it is a very excited crowd that rock up to witness the R150 000 Listed Port Elizabeth Gold Cup been run over the murderous distance of 3600m.

The East Cape champion jockey Greg Cheyne makes no secret about his desire to get his hands on the beautiful, huge trophy.

He has won most of PE big races over the years but has not won the PE Gold Cup yet.

β€œIt is a special race, not only for PE but for South Africa as it is the longest race and it is a beautiful trophy,” Cheyne said.

On Friday (22 June) trainer Tara Laing won the PE Gold Cup for the fifth time in the last six years – a wonderful training feat.

Laing just loves to win this race and was shouting her heart out in the HB Christian Room for jockey Callan Murray and the four year-old gelding Plano to bring home the bacon.

The Laing plan was to saddle three horses in the race but My World and Eastern Pearl had to pull out early and she focussed on getting Plano super fit for the race.

Former champion jockey Gavin Venter also plays a huge part in the success of the Laing stable. As a jockey he won the PE Gold Cup four times and no doubt his advice to Murray how to go about things came in handy.

Plano is bred by Maine Chance Farms and owned by Etienne Braun. He has won four races now with ten places.
