Fairview trainer Jacques Strydom is known for his ability to get the best out of his stayers, having trained the likes of Palm King, Arctic Fleece and Key Castle to famous victories in the country’s longest race, the Port Elizabeth Gold Cup.

Now Strydom has a huge challenge ahead of him as he has two promising stayers, Desert Wisdom and Frikkie, in his stable. They could well dominate the long distance races in the Eastern Cape.

Strydom will now try to get the best out of these two, which are both owned by Wimpie Kruger and his son Wimpie (Jnr), with Raymond Becker also a part owner of Frikkie.

Desert Wisdom drew first blood in winning a PE feature on Friday (16 March). The sixth year-old gelding won the Lakeside Handicap over 2400m with Frikkie taking third place.

Kruger has been a huge supporter of the Strydom yard for many years and loves the long distance races. He won the Lakeside Handicap in 2013 with Solo Flight, also trained by Strydom.

Now Strydom has to produce the goods again for Kruger in the other big long distance races in PE, a huge, but also exciting challenge.
