There are quite a number of familiar faces that find themselves in new roles in East Cape Racing.

Emmanuel Kaknis, his sister Christine and his mother Anne-Marie, has been involved in Port Elizabeth racing for some time now under the banner of Five Star Racing.

Last Friday (9 Feb) Emmanuel saddled his horses for the first time as a trainer and straight away produced a winner when the six year old gelding For Luck Sake, named by Christine, won a MR 66 Handicap on the Fairview Polytrack.

Anne-Marie and Christine were at the track to enjoy the moment with Emmanuel and there were even family members from Greece in PE to celebrate with the trainer.

Emmanuel thanked all the PE trainers who helped him on his way in obtaining his trainers’ license.

Charles Newcombe is another familiar face in a new role – from Clerk of Scales to track manager.

Newcombe takes over from Kleintjie Badenhorst as track manager. Kleintjie and his wife, Janet, recently relocated to KwaZulu-Natal.

Marilyn Smith, wife of trainer Gavin Smith, has taken over the duties of Janet in the Racing Association’s office at Fairview.

Gavin Venter is has been a prominent figure in PE racing for many years, first as a champion jockey and these days the right hand man in the stable of his fiancée, trainer Tara Laing.

Venter also had a stint as a Tellytrack presenter but could become more and more involved as an owner after having the first winner for Laing in his colours.

The six year old Threes Of Green won a MR 80 Handicap for owner Venter, with Laing remarking that she is delighted Venter was rewarded with the win for his massive contribution to the success of the stable.
