The Port Elizabeth racing fraternity prides itself on its team work.

This was very much evident in a Pinnacle Stakes on Friday the 13th at a meeting on the Fairview Polytrack.

For a while now the seven year-old gelding Gogetthesheriff has been one of the best horses in Port Elizabeth and one of the crowd’s biggest favourites.

The problem is that he is a very difficult customer at the start but this is where the team work kicked in.

Equine behaviourist Michael de Vrye has been working day and night to help the Sheriff to put his best foot forward.

De Vrye was at the start on Friday to help settle the Sheriff and was surprised about the huge public following this horse has.

“Everyone at the start was shouting for him,” De Vrye said. “I can just imagine what the vibe was at the finish line.”

Gogetthesheriff won the race in fine style with jockey Karl Zechner aboard but De Vrye warned that the real hard work with the PE star is only starting.

Trainer Jacques Strydom, of course a key figure in getting the horse back to his best, referred to the team work by saying PE loves the Sheriff.

“His owner Freddie van Onselen has been really patient and everyone was just shouting the horse home, even the trainers of the horses that were challenging the Sheriff in the race.

“Upstairs in the HB Christian Room we were all tense at the start and very relieved when he finally went into his starting stall.”

Strydom, Van Onselen, Zechner and De Vrye can be assured that they not the only people in the team behind the Sheriff’s mission – the PE racing fans are doing there bit also with their support for their favourite.
