It took a year, but Hill Fifty Four turned from bridesmaid to bride by winning the R2.5-million J&B Met over 2000m at Kenilworth on Saturday. Last year the son of Captain Al was beaten 0.30 lengths into second place by Martial Eagle but, this time, under a brilliant ride from Anton Marcus, Hill Fifty Four, who went off at 15-1, led almost from start to finish to beat Summer Cup winner Yorker by 1.25 lengths, with Punta Arenas long head back in third.

Whiteline Fever claimed fourth, just a head in front of 5-2 favourite Master Of My Fate. Marcus had the option of riding any of three horses but, based on the merit ratings and the fact that Yorker had been given a 2kg penalty for his Grade 1 victory in the Summer Cup, he opted for Hill Fifty Four.
