Trainer Candice Bass-Robinson has an exceptional string of two-year-olds to her bow this season, and she looks to have another exciting juvenile in the form of Clouds Unfold.
The latter made it two wins from three outings for owner-breeder Drakenstein Stud when romping to a 2.75 length win over well regarded stable mate Western Angel in a juvenile plate for fillies over 1000m at Kenilworth on Saturday.

The form of this win could well be worth following, with the runner up touted a possible prospect for KZN feature races this season.

Clouds Unfold, described by her trainer as “hot and temperamental”, had previously won a good race on debut before finishing sixth in the Listed Tattersalls Summer Juvenile Stakes on Sun Met day.

The filly’s pedigree is an interesting mixture of speed and stamina. Clouds Unfold is a daughter of Drakenstein’s very exciting and hugely popular stallion What A Winter (who topped the sires table at the recent April Yearling Sale). What A Winter is also responsible for the very promising Bass-Robinson trained 2yo Fabian, as well as the yard’s high class 3yos Dutch Philip and Magical Wonderland.

The chestnut Clouds Unfold is out of Montelissima, a Montjeu half-sister to Listed Summer Juvenile Stakes winner Arria and G2 Senor Santa Stakes third Pivotal Pursuit.
Clouds Unfold’s second dam Issa is a full-sister to unbeaten Yorkshire Oaks winner Catchascatchcan, dam of Breeders’ Cup Mile winner and former Highlands Stud sire Antonius Pius.

Saturday saw Kenilworth, not for the first time, dominated by jockey Grant Van Niekerk. The latter, who is riding out of his skin, booted home a four-timer when scoring on all of Clouds Unfold (race 1), Twist Of Fate (race 2), Spam Alert (race 5), and Konkola (race 7).

Spam Alert and Konkola provided log-leading trainer Justin Snaith with a perfect strike rate for the day, with the pair Snaith’s only two runners for that Saturday race meeting.

Spam Alert and Konkola both having siblings on offer at next week’s National Sale, with Spam Alert having a Marchfield half-brother (Lot 515) on sale, and Konkola a Duke Of Marmalade half-sister (Lot 491).
