LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings, which were released on Tuesday, saw 2018 Sun Met hopes Legal Eagle and Marinaresco the top rated South African runners for 2017.

Both geldings received ratings of 120, with dual Horse Of The Year Legal Eagle winning three graded features last year, and Marinaresco, also victorious in the G2 Drill Hall Stakes over 1400m last year, putting up a remarkable win to land the July under top weight of 60kgs last season.

Bred by Avontuur Thoroughbred Farms, the Braam Van Huyssteen, William Henderson and Hedley McGrath owned Legal Eagle, yet to be beaten over a mile, has earned more than R10.5 million in prize money, while Marinaresco, who races for Marsh Shirtliff, Bryn Ressell, Fred Green and Mike Bass, has earned just under half that, with his stakes earnings standing at over R5.1 million.

Legal Eagle, runner up in the Met the last two years running, will be ridden by regular rider Anton Marcus, while 2017 Vodacom Durban July winner Marinaresco will be partnered by Aldo Domeyer in Saturday’s R5 000 000 race.

The 2017 LONGINES World’s Best Racehorse Rankings were topped by US champion Arrogate who received a rating of 134.

Outstanding Australian racemare Winx, unbeaten in nine outings last year, was second on the list, with the daughter of Street Cry rated at 132.
