Highlands Stud have announced the passing of their champion sire Jallad, who died at the age of 29 this past weekend.
Jallad was sired by French champion and outstanding stallion Blushing Groom who was also responsible for such top class stallions as Rainbow Quest, Rahy and Runaway Groom. He was one of two high class stakes winnersproduced by the champion racemare Petrava, South Africa’s Champion 3YO Filly of 1984. Petrava, whose 10 wins included four G1 contests, is also dam of fellow Champion 3YO Filly Hoeberg, whose wins included both the G1 Cape Fillies Guineas and G1 Paddock Stakes.

This is the same family as yet another champion filly Princess Victoria, dam of impressive recent winner Princess Vicky, and recent debut winner Penny Royal.

Jallad himself was a high-class athlete, who won eight times from 1200-1400m including the G2 Durban Merchants. He also won the G3 Ashburton Training Centre Handicap and was placed in both the G2 Administrators Stakes (2nd) and G1 Natal Flying Championship (4th).

Champion sire in 2001, Jallad has left behind over 100 stakes horses with 16 of his stakes winners landing G1 features.

His best runners included Horse Of The Year and seven time G1 winner Free My Heart, ill-fated champion Rabiya, G1 Cape Derby hero Grande Jete, G1 J&B Met hero Zebra Crossing, Equus Champions Icy Air, Russian Sage and Succesful Bidder, star sprinters Scarena and Vega, Gold Cup winner Major Bluff, Garden Province Stakes winner and outstanding broodmare Lyrical Linda, and G1 Woolavington winner Zirconeum.

Jallad has also made his mark as a broodmare sire, with his daughters producing such G1 winners as Eyes Wide Open, Martial Eagle, Solo Traveller, Shea Shea and recent Sansui Summer Cup winner Liege
