Some of South Africa’s top fillies have been entered for the G2 Southern Cross, due to be run at Kenilworth on December9th.

Twenty-two fillies and mares have been entered for the 1000m contest, which this year sports  a purse of R400 000.

Among the notable fillies/mares entered for the race are last season’s Equus Champion Just Sensual, the 2016 Southern Cross winner Jo’s Bond, Sceptre Stakes heroine Live Life, recent Gardenia Handicap winner Queen Laurie and impressive recent debut winner Shufoog. Sommerlied and Casual Diamond, the 1-2 finishers in the Laisserfaire Stakes, are also intriguing entries for the 2017 Southern Cross Stakes.

No fewer than five visiting trainers have entered runners for this race, including Dennis Drier, whose entrant Sommerlied was such an impressive winner of the recent Listed Laisserfaire Stakes. Champion trainer Sean Tarry, who saddled Sunday’s G1 Sansui Summer Cup winner Liege, has entered last season’s G2 SA Fillies Nursery winner Green Plains, while other visitors who could have a runner in the race include Yvette Bremner, Mike de Kock and Grant Maroun.

Previous winners of the Southern Cross include such G1 winners as Marie Galante, Val De Ra, Via Africa, and Carry On Alice.

Jo’s Bond and Just Sensual are highest rated among the 22 entries, with both sporting merit ratings of 109.
