Wow Week for Wernars

Jarryd, Laurence and Tessa Wernars had four winners last week to earn the RA Owner of the Week Award.   They enjoyed two winners at the Vaal on 12 June - Empress Valley (NZ) ridden by Raymond Danielson produced a second consecutive win, a FM70 Handicap over 1800 metres and later in the day Ancient Spirit (Aus) won the 8th race a FM77 Divided Handicap over 1200 metres under the ride of K de Melo. Ancient Spirit is a two time winner who has been placed in every start. Moving forward to the racemeeting at Turffontein on 14 June, Santa Vittoria (Aus) won a Maiden Plate over 2000 metres by 5¼ lengths with Randall Symons on board. These three winners are from the Johan Janse van Vuuren stable. Youth Day at Turffontein – 16 June – Cold Cash (in partnership with AB Giuricich, A Joannides, JA Alexander) from the Gary Alexander won a FM84 Handicap over 2000 metres starting out at 13/1. This five year old mare was ridden by Apprentice D Schwartz and was bred at Summerhill Stud – Bankable (Ire) – Front Fairy – Linney Head (USA).

Bezanova might have “taken a walk” in the betting for the KwaZulu-Natal Breeders Million Mile over 1600m at Greyville on Sunday, he still managed to hold on to the R625,000 first stake cheque in a close call.

Bezanova, who had run a 0.90-length third to Legislate in the 1600m Gold Challenge previously, when Durban July second favourite Futura was a neck behind him in fourth, opened at 13-10 in the betting but went through the stalls at 5-2 in the face of long-priced support for a few other runners.
