The fighting spirit of trainer Gavin Smith has certainly rubbed off on his horses.

The Highway Man showed he has the same fighting spirit and big heart as his trainer in his remarkable victory in the R150 000 Listed East Cape Guineas for 3y olds over 1600 at Fairview on Friday (29 March).

In February The Highway Man got injured after dislodging jockey Muzi Yeni. The horse had terrible cuts on his chest and knee that required stitches but was back for his next race a month later.

After this outing The Guineas was his next mission but The Highway Man wasn’t giving much of a winning chance by the tipsters. He proved them wrong by winning brilliantly with Yeni in the saddle.

“It took hard work and patience to get him to here. (Owners) Michelle and Lesley Williams (Marimba Racing) take the ups and downs in racing and this win will be very rewarding,” Smith said.
