It’s always good to see the suave Chris van Niekerk being presented with a winners’ trophy and Saturday 2 March was a particularly good day at Turffontein for him and his team. He walked off with the Grade 1 R1 250 000 Wilgerbosdrift SA Fillies Classic over 1800 metres award when winning with his three year old filly Return Flight under the ride of Anton Marcus. Return Flight is a four time winner and was bred by Mr Mike Sharkey – Pomodoro – Heading Home by Special Preview. His
other feature win on the day was in the Listed Aquanaut Handicap over 2400 metres when five time winner Wonderous Climber who started favourite, won under the ride by Lyle Hewitson. This four year old gelding was bred at Highlands Farms Stud – Dynasty – Our Table Mountain (USA) by Fusaichi Pegasus (USA). Van Niekerk who is this week’s RA Owner of the Week had a winner earlier in the
week at Vaal Racecourse when Warrior’s Rest (Lyle Hewitson) won a MR94 Handicap over 1500 metres. All three winners are from the Sean Tarry stable.
